How do I speed up my Windows computer?

Tags: windows, performance

Solutions fall into two categories:

  1. Add better hardware.
  2. Optimize the software.

Add Better Hardware

These are more expensive options and include

  • Increase your RAM.
  • Install a Solid State Hard Drive.
  • Buy a new computer.

Optimize the Software

These are in the order that I find them most helpful. Opinions vary; this is mine.

  1. Limit how many programs & services run at startup.
    1. Control Panel > Administration > System Configuration (or just msconfig)
    2. Disable all non-Microsoft and non-Security services and startup programs.
    3. Further, disable obviously useless Microsoft Services.
    4. Further, if you have a good anti-virus, disable MSFT Security Center and Windows Defender.
  2. Turn off visual effects.
    1. Control Panel > Performance Info and Tools > Adjust visual effects
    2. Adjust for best performance.
  3. Turn off search indexing.
    1. Control Panel > Performance Info and Tools > Adjust indexing options
    2. Make sure it isn't running.
  4. Adjust power settings
    1. Control Panel > Performance Info and Tools > Adjust power options
    2. High performance (this does matter!)
  5. Try the Performance troubleshooter
    1. Requires Windows 7 or higher
  6. Use ReadyBoost
    1. This requires a USB stick.
    2. It basically increases RAM.
  7. Uninstall unused or nuisance software.
    1. Use RevoUninstaller for this.
    2. It's just more thorough.

Example Workflow

  • Restart the computer while pressing F8.
  • Start the computer in Safe Mode with command prompt.
    • This will make the computer faster during maintenance.
  • Carry out the above tasks.
  • Restart the computer normally, is it faster?
